Outline of the Combined Subjects Programme

The Combined Subjects Programme

Depending upon the amount of credits gained while undertaking the Combined Subjects Programme you could

  • gain an award such as a BA or a BSc (depending on the credits gained) in a combination of 2 subjects or
  • receive either an ordinary degree, a Higher Education Diploma or a Higher Education Certificate

Depending upon your chosen subjects it might be possible for you to take an optional sandwich placement year.

The Programme also allows flexibility at level 1. If you are undecided as to which subjects to study in years 2 and 3, you could discuss it with us and we will do everything we can to find the subject combination/balance that suits you best.

Full-Time Study

To qualify as a full-time student you must be studying modules totalling 80 credits or more during an academic year. The expectation is that you will study 120 credits per year, ideally 60 credits each semester.

Part-Time Study

Students studying on a part-time basis are permitted to register for up to 80 credits in any academic year. If 80 credits are exceeded full-time status is conferred. This means that it will take a part-time student a minimum of 9 Semesters/Blocks or four and a half years to obtain an Honours degree.

Changing Your Mode of Study

It may be possible to change your mode (Full Time/ Part Time) of study during the course of your Programme. If you wish to change from full-time to part-time, or vice versa, you must arrange an appointment to see a CSP Academic Tutor who will discuss with you the implications of such a change.

Award Titles

The number of credits obtained, the subjects studied and the combination type determines the title of your final award.

To obtain a degree with Honours you must have passed 360 credits (120 at each of the three Levels) including all cores and required options for your chosen combination type in each subject.

The subjects studied and combination type determine the award of BSc or BA, for example:

Major /Minor Combinations

  •             BA (Hons) English with History

  •             BSc (Hons) Psychology with Sociology

  •             BA (Hons) Sociology with Psychology

For students taking Major/Minor combinations the award of a BSc or BA is determined by the Major subject.

Dual Combinations

  •             BA (Hons) Politics and History

  •             BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology

For students taking Dual combinations the award of a BSc or BA is determined by the subject in which the student completes their project/dissertation.
