The University of Sunderland has been identified as one of the top providers of Primary Teacher Education in the university sector by the Government's Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).
Teachers in primary and secondary education and workers in the education sector play a vital role in helping children and young people develop and fulfil their potential. With a teaching or education related degree from Sunderland you have the opportunity to make a positive and real difference to children's lives.
The Faculty of Education and Society offers both primary and secondary programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our programmes have consistently been judged by Ofsted as being of a very high quality. Our secondary provision received the highest possible ratings in 2007; similarly our initial primary teacher education programmes were rated as very good.
In 2008 we celebrated 100 years of excellence in teaching training. Our Faculty was established in 1908 as a small ladies teacher training college in Sunderland under the guidance of two academic tutors. By 1992 the college had become the School of Education and Lifelong Learning in the new University of Sunderland, committed to excellence in all phases of education, both nationally and internationally. In 2008 the School became the Faculty of Education and Society.
The Faculty has grown significantly over the past 100 years and now provides a wide range of secondary and primary courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Faculty also offers an extensive range of 11-18 years postgraduate programmes (14-19 Diploma PGCE programmes are pending) including Design and Technology, English, Geography, ICT, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and Business. For those students wishing to study at undergraduate level, we offer ICT, English, Geography, Mathematics and Design and Technology. Our portfolio has been extended by the addition of a Maths Enhancement Course which enables those students with an associated Maths degree and/or those requiring additional Maths subject knowledge, to engage in a six month top-up course before progressing to a secondary postgraduate programme. This has proved to be a very successful route for those wishing to teach mathematics in secondary school.
Our four year primary undergraduate programme and the one year postgraduate programme continues to attract students wishing to develop their knowledge and understanding across a number of subject areas within the primary curriculum.
Our three year Childhood Studies degree is for students interested in young children and their development and our new Applied Family Studies degree programme enables applicants to broaden their understanding of the family and investigate the different ways in which the structure of the family impacts upon children, young people and parents.
There is currently a national shortage of teachers in most the subjects where we offer PGCEs, so your job prospects will be excellent.
