Research

The English area is one of the most lively and respected research units in the University. English performed well in the last national Research Assessment Exercise, confirming that the English team contains a number of leading experts in their academic fields, with significant research strengths in postcolonial literature, eighteenth and nineteenth century literature, contemporary British and American literature, world literature and English language.

Proposals for postgraduate research on any topics are welcome. At the moment, there are students researching on projects as diverse as the representation of depression in eighteenth-century literature, ideology in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, the novels of Marie Corelli and the influence of the North East on the writings of Lewis Carroll. Initial enquiries about research degrees should be sent to Dr Geoffrey Nash.

As well as providing academic expertise to support individual projects, the department is also committed to providing research students with a good grounding in generic and subject-specific research skills and with appropriate careers guidance.
