Dr Sarah Hackett - Modern European History

Sarah Hackett's research interests are in modern European history. In particular, she specialises in post-war Muslim immigration to Britain and Germany . She recently completed her Ph.D. (University of Durham) in which she compared the level of integration of the South Asian community in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with that of the Turkish community of Bremen . Her thesis examined the impact that Britain's relatively liberal immigration policy and Germany 's rigid guest-worker rotation system have had on the long-term integration of Muslim immigrants at a grassroots level. It looked specifically at the employment, housing and education sectors. Her research interests also include issues of general immigration, demography and European social institutions. She is currently publishing the findings of her research and is working on a monograph that will be published by Manchester University Press. She welcomes enquiries from postgraduates with an interest in these areas.
