Our Students

Students have many reasons for coming to study at Sunderland.  Of course, getting a worthwhile job at the end of your studies is one of the primary reasons for attending university.  But there are other important reasons, as Anne Beattie, a first-year student studying English with American Studies, explains in a tribute to a friend.

Career Opportunities

We lay great stress on helping you to acquire skills valued by employers; the ability to analyse complex material quickly, to communicate clearly and form sensible judgements.  History graduates are much sought after by industry and commerce, working in jobs ranging from sales and marketing to finance, journalism and the law.  Graduates may go on to postgraduate research or study, teach history at all levels or maintain historical research interests through local History Societies.

Prizes

There are a number of History prizes available to high achieving students, find out more in the Within this Area section.

Study abroad

Students in the second year of either a single-honours degree, or as part a Combined Subjects History, Politics or American Studies degree, have the option of studying abroad.  In American Studies, they are encouraged to study at an American University.

Sunderland is almost unique in allowing students to study abroad as part of a three year degree; most other universities have this option but only as part of a four-year degree.

We have a number of reciprocal links with Universities in Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and the USA.  These studies are credited to the history degree allowing you to experience living in a foreign country and experience a different educational system.  Find out more about our exchange partners...
