The North East tends to be cooler and drier than other parts of England, but the climate is still typical of the country as a whole, with mild winters and summers.

As a coastal city, Sunderland is milder than many other parts of the North East and has less frequent snowfall in winter. Average temperatures in Sunderland tend to drop to around 2°C in winter and rise to around 25°C in summer, with below-average rainfall throughout the year.
