One of our greatest strengths as a university is our commitment to widening access to higher education to those with talent, regardless of background.
We have opened the door of higher education to thousands upon thousands of people who, for whatever reason, may not have had the chance otherwise. Sunderland, the North-East and the UK are littered with case studies highlighting the benefits of this commitment.
For nine of the ten years that the government-backed performance indicators have operated, Sunderland has been named the leading university in the UK for widening access.
The University is pioneering award-winning work in primary and secondary schools to ensure children in Sunderland and the wider region feel that higher education is a natural progression in their education and that it doesn't end at 16.
