English and Foundation Programmes
FoundationCampus Sunderland
In partnership with Cambridge Education Group, the University of Sunderland offers an English Language Preparation Programme. This programme is ideal for non-EU students whose English language levels are not yet high enough for entry to the Extended Undergraduate Foundation Programme.

Preparatory (pre-degree) programmes
We can provide pre-degree routes to virtually all our degree programmes. The following are curently available:

Joint Scheme of Extended Programmes (Level 0) in Science
English language (short courses)
English for Academic Purposes (EAP UP)
If you do not have the necessary English language qualifications you can study English for Academic Purposes (EAP UP) during the summer before your degree programme begins.
The four programmes you can study are:
English for Academic Purposes A
English for Academic Purposes B
English for Academic Purposes C
English for Academic Purposes D
- The classes run from April to September in the run-up to the start of a degree programme.
- You will need to have IELTS scores ranging from 4.0 to 6.0.
- They focus on the development of skills for study and research and include sessions on note taking, study techniques, seminar skills, writing essays and dissertations, planning research projects and making presentations.
International students applying for full-time study are encouraged to complete at least one EAP course to get the most out of their studies.
University of Sunderland English Language Teaching Courses (USELT)
As well as the EAP courses on offer to international students, we also have USELT courses which are designed for people who teach English as a foreign/second/additional language and who wish to update their knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages internationally. The University also offers ongoing English Language support during your full-time studies.
University Language Scheme (ULS) - English for Academic Purposes and English for Business Studies (insessional modules)
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Business Studies (EBS) modules on the University Language Scheme provide essential in-sessional language support for students whose first language is not English and help them to participate fully in their chosen field of study. Modules are free of charge for existing students.
All new international students are asked to come to the Language Centre (Room 201), Forster Building, City Campus, Chester Road, during the final week of September to sit a short test. For more information on the scheme please click here.
