Creative Arts Summer School
Our Creative Arts Summer School will offer you the chance to work through a range of art and design practices including:

You will focus on a theme to produce work for a public exhibition, which will be located in CitySpace, our brand new £12m sports and social facility. Cultural visits and field trips will form an integral part of your time in the North East of England and will inspire your creative work. The workshops will be delivered by experienced tutors in specialist artist spaces and studios, such as studying glass and ceramics at our very own National Glass Centre in Sunderland. Located in an architechturally innovative building on the north bank of the River Wear, the National Glass Centre houses the UK's largest art glass-making facility with some of the best glass and ceramics making facilities in Europe, or even the World.
Aims, Objectives and Learning Outcomes
This course will teach you about the creative decision-making process used in arts and design, giving you the knowledge and skills to develop your original concept into a finished piece of work. You will develop your ability to research and produce artwork via a range of disciplines, plus how to professionally curate your work for a public exhibition.
Your Student Experience
You will be introduced to a range of skills used in arts and design production, as well as how to curate visual arts materials into an exhibition. You will be introduced to a range of art and design practices, including drawing, print making, glass, ceramics, photography, video, animation and design.
Following your chosen theme, you will be encouraged to gather visual material, such as sketches and photographs, from the supervised cultural visits and fieldtrips to museums, art galleries and other sites. Working under supervision and in small groups, you will develop your ideas through studio demonstrations, seminars and self-negotiated study.
Assessment
Your portfolio of preparatory work, which will include sketches, video, photography and curatorial notes, will be assessed by staff at the end of the course and will contribute 50% to your final grade. The remaining 50% is based on your finished work displayed in a public exhibition at the end of the course.
You will have an course leader who will guide you through your studies, in addition to a number of other staff and student/graduate mentors who will accompany you on your visits.
