cameras microphones
mixing desks recording media

You will also have the opportunity to broadcast on our full-time radio station, 107 Spark FM, which can be heard around the World at sparksunderland.com   Working with experienced tutors and other students on the Summer School, you will focus on a theme to produce a short television programme for a public screening and you will be able to take copies of your work home with you.  Your work will be screened in CitySpace, our brand new £12m sports and social facility.

Cultural visits and field trips will form an integral part of your time in the North East and will inspire your creative work.  The workshops will mainly be delivered in the David Puttnam Media Centre, located on the north bank of the River Wear.  It is one of the UK's most advanced centres for training media students, with facilities that often match or even exceed standards in the media industries worldwide.  Built at a cost of £9m and opened in 2003, we've recently invested a further £1.5m to keep our facilities at the cutting edge of technology.

Aims, Objectives and Learning Outcomes

This course will teach you the creative decision making process used in television and/or video production, enabling you to develop an original concept in television and/or video through to post-production and playback.  You will also develop the skills needed to research and produce speech radio contact, including the use of interview material and actuality for live radio broadcasting to a target audience.

Your Student Experience

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, screening or playbacks, demonstrations and production exercises as appropriate, supplemented by opportunities for group discussion and critique.  You will participate in practical workshops and group study on specific tasks employing specialist equipment, plus you will be able to film and record various visits and fieldtrips.

You will be introduced to a range of the skills used in television and/or video production, as well as those used in producing speech packages for inclusion in live radio programming.  Through practical workshops, supervised exercises, screenings, playbacks and discussion, you will learn the technical practices and creative skills required to produce a video in the style of a short item for television and a radio report for broadcast on 107 Spark FM.  Working under supervision and in small groups, you will originate, develop, script, shoot or record and edit the two productions, each of between 3 or 5 minutes in duration.  If suitable for public playback or broadcast, the video will form part of a public screening and the radio report will be incorporated into a live broadcast on 107 Spark FM.

Assessment

You will be assessed at the end of the three week course:  50% for your group video production and 50% for your group or individual radio speech package production.  You will have an overall course leader who will guide you through your studies, in addition to a number of other staff and student/graduate mentors who will accompany you on your visits.
