Performing Arts Summer School

Our Performing Arts Summer School will offer you the chance to work through a range of musical theatre practices including:

harmony singing  choreography 
character work  projection and performance techniques     
 group and solo work                     

You will focus on musical theatre as a genre, producing work from a number of musicals for a public performance at the end of the course.  Your work will be performed in CitySpace, our brand new £12m sports and social facility.  Cultural visits and fieldtrips will form an integral part of your time in the North East and will inspire your creative work.  The workshops will be delivered by experienced tutors in specialist performance spaces and studioes, such as our large galleried dance studio with adjacent rehearsal rooms, a fully equipped 60 seat drama studio and recording studios.

Aims, Objectives and Learning Outcomes

This course will teach you the key elements of the performing arts genre, such as musical theatre.  You will gain skills and competences in the technical and interpretive demands of the genre.

Your Student Experience

You will work through a range of theatre practices in the selected performing arts genre, for example within musical threatre you will leanr about harmony sining, choreography, character work, projection and performance techniques, group and solo work.  Everyone will participate in singin, dancing and acting and take part in vocal and movement techniques.  You will focus on a theatrical genre to produce extracts from a range of productions.  For example, productions you may cover for musical threatre include Wicked, Rent, We Will Rock You, Westside Story and Seussical.

You will be taught how to develop your professional skills, which you will demonstrate through preparation for rehearsals, punctuality and a high level of engagement.  You will be expected to respond professionally to direction.

Assessment

You will be assessed on your public performance at the end of your course.  You will have a course leader who will guide you through your studies, in addition to a number of other staff and student/graduate mentors who will accompany you on your visits.
