Two Sunderland experts have created a must have book for fitness professionals – the first of its kind in the UK
University of Sunderland experts Morc Coulson and David Archer have collaborated on The Advanced Fitness Instructor's Handbook, the definitive handbook for instructors in the health and fitness industry.
Physiology of Training lecturer David Archer says: “I teach exactly what this book is all about. The text books out there are either very advanced, with no technical, practical element – or they’re very basic with very little science in them.
“We identified a niche. The science underpins this book throughout, but it has strong practical applications. There are no other books like this in the UK.”
Sports and Exercise Sciences lecturer Morc Coulson says: “We felt there was a gap for a more progressive book, more in-depth and more scientific. This particular book covers lots of practical and theoretical issues, and we felt that in the British market there wasn’t a book that does that.”
The duo are now nearing completion on a new book, which will look at how fitness professional can apply best practice testing to their work.
Morc says “The next book will focus on how you can apply testing to these theories. It is specifically for people such as coaches and fitness instructors who don’t have access to top facilities or technical equipment.”
David added: “We have information on the more complicated and expensive techniques available so readers are aware that these techniques are out there – but also looking critically at the limitations and benefits of these tests as well as the costs.”
The Advanced Fitness Instructor's Handbook, by Morc Coulson and David Archer, is published by A & C Black. ISBN 1408101467 priced around £16.99 and is available at Amazon.co.uk and at all good bookshops.
