Curatorial Research for Upstart Media Bliss (CRUMB)

The School has had a special interest in digital or new media art, and curating, since 1993. Digital Artists in Residence have included Veronique Chance (Digital Fellow 1999/2000), and Geoff Broadway (Durham Cathedral resident 2000/2001) who worked with sound and video installation concerning the population of asylum-seekers in the Sunderland area.

Professor Beryl Graham and Dr. Sarah Cook run CRUMB, the resource for curators and exhibitors of new media art. The research group includes PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers, who publish and lecture widely on the subject. The project has been awarded a series of major Research Grants by the AHRC, and research partners have included BALTIC (2000-2006) and from 2007, Eyebeam (New York) and Lancaster University.

This research area works across the disciplines of fine art, lens-based imaging, or design, and across different Schools in the University to cover the range of new and digital media, for example working with /sLab the digital media lab, and teaching on the MA Curating course.

Current and completed PhD students Carole Baker, Debby Akam, Andrew Richardson and Manny Ling have a particular interest in digital media.
