Duration:   Normally Full-time 3-4 years

                    Normally Part-time 5-6 years.

PhD candidates are expected to critically investigate an approved topic and to demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to their chosen field.  Holders of the PhD will have the ability to conceptualise, design and implement projects for the generation of significant new knowledge and/or understanding.

The investigation should result in the creation and interpretation of knowledge which extends the forefront of a discipline and makes an original contribution.  The PhD will be awarded once the candidate has satisfactorily presented and defended a thesis by oral examination.

Entry Requirements

The normal entry requirement for a research degree is a UK Honours Degree (first or upper second class) or a UK Masters Degree or a qualification which is regarded as an equivalent.

Candidates with other qualifications are considered on their merits.  In such cases the University seeks evidence of academic ability which might, for example, be demonstrated by publications or by other means.

English Language Competency

Students must have a minimum test result of 6.5 from the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or equivalent.  Also a score of at least 6 is required for all of the test components.
