There’re tons of things to do as well, with a host of activities on offer for students.
Our city has a wide selection of venues as part of what is a fast-growing and buzzing scene. The city’s bars are varied, with pubs for those who prefer a quieter night and clubs for those who love nothing more than to dance into the early hours.

Music and Arts
Sunderland is one of the central hubs for culture in the North East. Come summertime, the Stadium of Light is transformed into one of the biggest music venues in the country, playing host to some of the music world’s biggest acts. Rihanna, The Kings of Leon and One Direction have all graced the stage at Sunderland in the past, along with a host more.
Meanwhile, the Sunderland Empire Theatre continues to draw in some of the biggest shows and acts out there. Shrek the Musical, The Lion King and Billy Elliot have all delighted sell-out crowds here while the likes of Derren Brown, Jimmy Carr and Michael McIntyre have also played successful shows here.
The Students’ Union
One of the best ways to get out and meet people is through the Students’ Union. And Sunderland’s SU is one of the best. It was was ranked fifth in the country, so you know you’re in good hands. They organise a whole host of trips, from paintballing to movie nights, most of which are free or at student-friendly prices. They can help you try things you never thought you would, and make a whole host of new friends in the process. Membership to the Union is absolutely free for all students, so be sure to take advantage of the great offers and events available.

Societies and Clubs
University wouldn’t be a university without societies and clubs. And we have a huge number of them, who would love for you to join up. Societies are a brilliant way to meet people with similar interests to you.
