Course overview

This course offers the opportunity to study professional musicianship at undergraduate level, developing practical, technical and theoretical expertise through intellectual discipline.

The course is based at Sage Gateshead and you will be part of the community of musicians at one of the UK’s most exciting music venues. You will be regularly involved with visiting artists, masterclasses and links with other music-related organisations.

You will be taught by musicians who have established national profiles in the fields of jazz, popular and commercial music. The professional teaching, together with the excellent facilities, has earned our courses a strong reputation. According to The Guardian University Guide 2012, Sunderland is within the UK’s top third of universities that offer music courses.

Modules include ‘Critical Studies’, ‘Professional Studies’, ‘Instrumental Studies’, ‘Ensemble Studies’, ‘Aural Studies’, ‘Harmony’ and ‘Performance’. There is considerable flexibility over the choice of modules, allowing you to tailor the course to your particular skills and interests.

The range of career paths for our graduates includes freelance performance, recording, broadcasting, composition, arranging, production, publishing, management and teaching.

This course is aimed at people who have achieved Grade 8 or an equivalent standard in music performance.
