Media Studies - Combined Subjects (Major, Dual and Minor) BA/BSc (Hons)

Course overview

With media studies, you can pursue an interest in films, cultural theory, media analysis and related topics.

You will study a number of core modules that explore important theories in media studies. If you choose a dual or major route, you will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of additional options.

Some options are theory-based; they include ‘Film Theory and Criticism’, ‘Politics, Power and the Media’ and ‘Asian Cinema’. Other options are practice-based and they include ‘Website Production with Video’, ‘Print Journalism’ and ‘Screenwriting for TV and Film’.

If you would like to combine media studies with Public Relations or journalism, please apply for the BA (Hons) Mass Communications.

You could combine media studies with any of the other subjects in the Combined Subjects programme. You can choose to spend a third, half, or two thirds of your study time on media studies.

On all modules, teaching is enriched where appropriate by Sunderland’s cutting-edge research. We host the Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 65% of our research was rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The University is a very supportive learning environment. Throughout your degree you will have a Personal Tutor who will monitor progress, discuss options and offer appropriate guidance.
