Loans
The Government offers a Tuition Fee Loan and a Maintenance Loan to help you cover the cost of Higher Education.
Tuition Fee Loans
The Tuition Fee Loan covers the full cost of your tuition fees. The loan is paid directly from the Government to the University.
Who is eligible to apply for tuition fee loans?
Full-time students from the UK and EU are eligible to apply.
If you already have a Higher Education qualification at the same or higher level you may not be eligible - for more information see the page Applicants with an existing HE qualification.
Part-time students can get loans too, but the terms are slightly different. For full details please see the DirectGov website.
Paying back the loan
There are no upfront costs for tuition fees, you will make your contribution to the cost of your fees when you graduate and are earning more than £21,000 per year.
You start re-paying the loans when you earn more than £21,000 a year. You then pay back a contribution of 9% of your income over £21,000.
This table shows how much it will cost to pay back your tuition fee loan:
| Your salary | Amount of salary that the 9% repayment will be calculated from | Your weekly take-home pay (after tax and NI deductions) | Your weekly repayment | Your monthly repayment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £25,000 | £4,000 | £372.35 | £7.50 | £30.00 |
| £30,000 | £9,000 | £437.74 | £16.88 | £67.50 |

| £45,000 | £24,000 | £629.02 | £45.00 | £180.00 |
Maintenance Loans
The Government also offers a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs such as rent or food. The Maintenance Loan is up to £5,500 a year and does need to be paid back.
The exact amount of Maintenance Loan available to you will depend on:
- Your family’s income
- Where you live
- What year of study you’re in
- What help you get through the Maintenance Grant
Part-time students can’t apply for a Maintenance Loan.
