What is Engineering?

Engineers have revolutionised the way we live - developing technology we take for granted and yet use every day. Cars, aircraft, ships, energy and medical equipment are all complex feats of engineering. Become an engineer and really contribute to how we all live our lives.

Why Sunderland for Engineering?

  • Strong links with Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, Thyssen Krupp Automotive, Tallent Chassis Ltd and Nicholson McLaren
  • Access to Nissan's test track, equipment and expertise
  • Cutting-edge research in the Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP)

We are the automotive university in the region and are becoming one of the leading knowledge sources in the UK for the automotive and manufacturing sectors.

Our students design, build, test and race a 600cc single-seat racing car against other universities in the Formula Student contest. Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd support our Formula Student team, allowing us to use their test track and providing car parts and engine development.

Engineering is an integral part of the North East economy and programmes at Sunderland benefit from strong links with industry and local experts. They in turn exploit specific strengths of the Department and the expertise of our Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) which is constantly carrying out research in control engineering, automotive materials, manufacturing and the human factors affecting the sector.

Our industrial partners include Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, Thyssen Krupp Automotive, Tallent Chassis Ltd and Nicholson McLaren.

Lectures by practising professional engineers and specialists provide an invaluable insight into the latest applications and developments in each branch of engineering. This collaboration also provides numerous opportunities for creative design, case studies, and individual and group projects.
