History and Politics

What is History?

History enables us to understand the past, interpret the present, and gives important insights into the future. Our course at Sunderland provides a wide variety of modules to study, ranging from Tudor England to Martin Luther King, from imperialism to women's history.

With History, you develop skills of critical thinking, communication and analysis - attributes that employers constantly say that they want.

Students with a History degree from Sunderland have gone on to work in a very wide range of professions, from law and business to teaching and politics.

Why Sunderland for History?

  • History research rated 'world leading' (RAE)
  • Unique digital collection of trade union histories
  • Excellent student support

Sunderland has a digitized collection of the records of the National Union of Miners and other unions that have shaped the history of the North East. The North East of England also has a rich historical legacy and there are many museums, collections and archives in the area.

Studying History at Sunderland, you will be a real person, not a number. We pride ourselves on the amount of individual attention given to each student as well as the expertise of our staff. We have an active research culture, and Sunderland's History team performed very well in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
