The chance to study for a law degree in English led Ahmed Khalil to travel thousands of miles from his home in Egypt to Sunderland.
Ahmed left university in his home city of Cairo where he was studying political science and swapped his course and lifestyle for a degree in the UK.
He said: "I had started the course in Cairo but instinctively I knew it was not what I wanted to do. I wanted to study Law but also to gain a degree in England which would make me more employable.
"The course at Sunderland was great. It was just what I was looking for and I studied hard. The work paid off as I secured a job during my second year at Sunderland with a law firm in London where I now work.
"I am now specialising in corporate finance law and hope long-term to go into international arbitration.
"The move to the UK meant a whole culture change for me but the university supported me to make what was a big step easy. University life helped me mature as a person and to begin to make big decisions for myself. Moving alone to a new country also taught me life skills that help me every day of my working life.
"I worked hard at university and now I am working hard in the world's largest law firm in one of the most exciting capital cities in the world. Thanks to the course in Sunderland I have a new future ahead of me."
