Sport and Exercise Sciences

What is Sport and Exercise Sciences?

With the imminent arrival of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, sport has never been so highly prized nor prominent in the UK. In addition, concerns about less-active lifestyles, poor diets and health have led to increased media awareness of these topics.

These issues are now leading the drive for well-qualified and experienced sport and exercise professionals.

You could be one of those professionals delivering the services that are needed to get the country active and fit and ensuring that we have sportsmen and women who can compete at the highest levels.

Why Sunderland for Sport and Exercise Sciences?

  • Funding for talented athletes
  • Practical learning with focus on employability
  • Excellent opportunities to participate in sport

Our sport and exercise programmes will help you develop skills in coaching, exercise leadership and management, introductory sports and exercise sciences, and the social contexts in which sport and exercise exists.

We are developing an extensive community sport and physical activity programme with schools and colleges in and around the city, to support your learning in coaching and leadership work.

Sunderland provides some funding for student sportsmen and women - we provide funding for talented individuals through our Elite Athlete Support Scheme and we are part of the national Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). Sunderland also competes in the inter-university BUCS competitions in several sports.

Our programmes have been designed to ensure that they meet the needs of the sport, exercise and health, and leisure areas of employment. As a result, our graduates can gain access into many different working environments in the public, commercial and voluntary sectors of sport, health and leisure.
