Professor of Computer Science
My research focuses on user experience design and evaluation, considering issues such as designing immersive experiences, exploring design for user trust, and evaluating the impact of technology enhanced learning.
I am actively engaged in knowledge exchange external engagement, working with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and organisations particularly in the creative, digital and IT sector. Recent projects with SMEs have involved online legal services development, energy brokerage systems and printwork productivity improvement.
Teaching and supervision
- Succeeding at University and Beyond
- Principals of Digital and Technology Solutions
- Computing Project
I am currently supervising nine students undertaking PhDs or Professional Doctorates.
Research interests for potential research students
- User evaluation methods
- Using immersive / AR / VR / mixed realities for performance and interactive artworks
- Intimate interaction: sex with robots
- Research targeting users with intellectual / cognitive disabilities
- Knowledge exchange: academic-business / academic-community collaborations and how these can be helped and hindered
Current projects include SoCoRo (EPSRC) - evaluating the use of social robotics with high functioning autistic adults and Creative Fuse NE (AHRC) – focusing on the fusion of creativity, innovation and HCI.
I have particular interests both in improving the evaluation experience for end users and in increasing the quality and usefulness of such results for users of the research findings.
I also engage in research relating to knowledge exchange focusing on how to improve academic-industry engagement.
