Senior Lecturer

I joined the University of Sunderland in 1990. I was awarded a DPhil in 1991 for research leading to the development of a flexible learning mechanism.

I have always been interested in the teaching of computing, programming and research, as these are essential skills required by every business / industry and public sector employers. I have also held a long-time interest in the development of intelligent computing systems, expert systems, machine learning, knowledge engineering and intelligent robotics.

During this time I have been a programme leader for various undergraduate and MSc degrees and find the role of nurturing and caring for students very fulfilling.

I have published 5 books, several of which are available for free on bookboon.com, and edited several collections of research papers.

Teaching and supervision

I am Programme Leader for:

I am Module Leader for the Research module and Principles of Software Engineering Teaching programming (C#).

Research

Since starting at the University of Sunderland, I have published approximately 20 research papers in various conferences or journals – mostly these relate to my research interests but occasionally also relate to my teaching. I have also supervised two successful PhD students.
