Head of School of Computer Science

My academic background is varied: I hold a PhD in Natural Language Processing (Automatic Text Simplification), an MSc in Computer Based Information Systems, an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a BA (Hons) in Classics. I have supervised and examined PhDs in Natural Language Processing, Information Classification and Retrieval, Internationalisation of Higher Education, and TESOL.

Having previoulsy been a Principal Lecturer for Learning and Teaching, my research interests in recent years have focused on pedagogy and in particular student engagement, motivation and identity; assessment and feedback; and graduate employability in Computer Science. I currently lead the Learning Development Group in CPHC (Council of Professors and Heads of Computing).

Teaching and supervision

I am Module Leader for our innovative 100 credit module Fundamentals of Computing. This module is taken by all first year students in the School and seeks to integrate the various sub-disciplines of computing to contextualise student learning. My specific focus within this module are Software Engineering and Context.

I am also Module Leader for the final year capstone project (dissertation) module taken by all students on the six undergraduate courses.

Research interests for potential research students

  • Pedagogy in Computer Science
  • Graduate Employability in Computer Science
