I am the programme leader for MA Design and also teach on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme. My research interests include calligraphy, typography, visual communication and cross-cultural discourses.

I am the design editor for two international calligraphy journals: the EDGE from the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) and the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI). My artwork is exhibited around the world and appears in numerous publications. I obtained my PhD ‘Calligraphy Across Boundaries’ in 2008 and was awarded in the same year, the Honorary Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (HFCLAS) for my contribution to the advancement and development of calligraphy.

I am the Director of the International Research Centre for Calligraphy (IRCC) and I have curated numerous international calligraphy symposia, exhibitions and publications. I am also a designer and typographer and a full member of the Typographic Circles and Letter Exchange.

Research

My research deals mainly on cross-cultural practices, paying particular interests in western calligraphy and East Asian practices. I am also a graphic designer and typograher. I enjoy working with letterforms, be it digital or hand-made.

Being a Chinese person practising Western art and design has had a profound influence on my life. I am fascinated by the theme of contrasts and contradictions in my work: Handmade and Digital, East and West, Old and New, Energy and Stillness.
