I am a graduate (MEng 2002, PhD 2006) of the University of Birmingham, a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

At present I am involved in the Stage 1 Design and Build Project and I am Module Leader for Stage 2 modules on Microprocessors and PLCs and Automation for Manufacturing. I am co-module lead for the Engineering Final Year project and I'm also involved in the operation of the module at our international partners.
At postgraduate level, I am Programme Leader for MSc Manufacturing Engineering and was heavily involved in its development.
I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects in a range of topics. I am currently co-supervising two PhD students and I am Director of Studies for one student. I have also examined PhDs and Professional Doctorates.

I am co-supervisor of the following students:
- Abdulrahman Shaalan: Development of a maintenance management strategy utilizing modern maintenance systems and cost based performance indicators for complex and large manufacturing assets.
- Adrian Morris: Developing a strategy for using energy consumption as an indicator of asset condition within condition based maintenance in manufacturing.
- Helen Scott: A User Centred Model for the Design of Manufacturing Maintenance Training using Virtual and Augmented Reality.
The core theme of my research career thus far has been the application of a range of theoretical concepts from engineering and computing, acquired during my own PhD and early postdoctoral work, to a range of real world problems to create impact for a variety of stakeholders.
I have been involved in a number of externally funded research projects including:
Atorus KTP – June 2017 – June 2019
I am lead academic on this project, the objectives of which are:
- To develop a multi-criterion decision framework exploiting and deriving knowledge from data.
- To provide intelligent tools for construction project management facilitating optimised decision making in multi-actor contexts through knowledge and data rich insights into the DNA of complex projects.

Imprint KTP (September 2014 – February 2016)
I was knowledge-base supervisor for this KTP, the objective of which was to embed expertise in new product development to produce an innovative, miniaturised product departure conformance system. The project received a final rating of “Very Good”.
Franks Portlock (January 2013 – July 2014)
I was Knowledge Base supervisor for this project – the objective of which was to design new and innovative ultra-portable air sampling products with sophisticated data capture capabilities. The project received a final grade of “Outstanding”.
Electric Vehicle Through-Life Management based on Telematic Data (September 2012 – March 2013)
I was Principal Investigator on this project, funded by the EPSRC Centre for Through Life Engineering Services based at Cranfield University. The goal of the project was to evaluate opportunities to use Vehicle Telemetry technology to enhance the operation of Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles in terms of enhancing component and vehicle life and supporting enhanced asset management.
Low Carbon and Electric Vehicle Monitoring Project (2011 – 2014)
I was Principal Investigator of this project, funded by the Sunderland City Council, Nexus and the University of Sunderland Facilities Service. The project looked at the use of vehicle tracking data to inform fleet replacement decisions with a particular focus on evaluating the suitability of Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles.
Posseidon (2009 – 2010)
I contributed to the latter stages of this EU FP6 funded project, which developed a condition monitoring system for marine lubricating oil. My role was to develop a prototype software solution to integrate data from a number of sensors to provide condition assessments and prognostic advice to on-board engineering personnel. The project involved work with partners across Europe.
Over the last four years I have begun to conduct research around my teaching, specifically relating to final year projects and driving engagement and employability skills within technical coursework exercises.
I am currently investigating the applicability of Problem and Project Based Learning approaches to postgraduate engineering education and their alignment with employer needs and professional body standards.
