Programme Leader BA English

I graduated with a BA (Hons) in English and Philosophy at King's College, Cambridge University in 1984 and with a PhD in postmodern American fiction at the University of Sunderland in 1992. 

I have authored two monographs, co-edited a collection of essays, and published numerous book chapters and journal articles. My work has been translated into various languages, including Romanian, Japanese, and Vietnamese.

I am currently module leader for:

  • ELL141 Order from Chaos: Introduction to Narrative and Poetry
  • ELL225 X-Raying the Short Story
  • ELL264 Under the Red, White and Blue: American Literature, 1820-1920
  • ELL361 In Our Times: Contemporary British Fiction

Research interests for potential research students

My research specialisms are in contemporary British and American fiction (particularly Kazuo Ishiguro, Peter Ackroyd, Thomas Pynchon, and Paul Auster); critical theory (particularly postmodernism); and literary history.
