Reader in Health Professions Pedagogic Practice and Visiting Professor of Higher Education

I am a Reader in Health Professions Pedagogic Practice in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing. I am qualified in podiatry and a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow) and a Fellow of the College of Podiatry and General Practice (London). I undertake pedagogic research, evaluation and supervise doctoral and MSc students.

In addition to my Readership role, I have published widely on qualitative research methodologies and the development of professional practice in health. I have an active interest in transcending disciplinarity between science and arts as signature pedagogies and I am currently working with colleagues on a monograph titled 'Beyond Disciplinarity in Social Science'. I have been a UK Advisor in Podiatric Medicine for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and I was awarded Honorary Membership by Distinction of the Faculty of Public Health in 2015 and was elected to the Royal Society of Arts in 2016.

I am national Convenor of the RAISE Network's Postgraduate and Professional Practice Special Interest Group (SIG). I am the Tenth Anniversary Visiting Professor of Higher Education Pedagogic Practice at the University of Cumbria and Visiting Professor of Higher Education at Liverpool Hope University. I was awarded Chartered Manager Status, Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, a National Teaching Fellowship and Fellowship of the Society for Education and Training in 2017. I am also an active member of the national Staff Educational Development Association (SEDA).

I was publicly elected to the position of Secretary to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) for the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine in May 2018.

Teaching and supervision

As a member of the Faculty of Health, Sciences and Wellbeing, I lead the postgraduate dissertation modules for MSc Public Health and MSc Nursing.

I have taught the philosophical underpinnings of research design and methodology for the last ten years across several university programmes and I have worked in developing new approaches to the use of autoethnography as a method of critical introspection for doctoral candidates. I also lead the Professional Doctorate module on Critical Reflective Practice and team-teach with colleagues across the programme at the Sunderland and London campus.

I currently supervise Professional Doctorate and PhD students and I regularly chair Viva Voce examinations, annual monitoring events and act as Internal Examiner for doctoral candidates across the University's faculties. I am a member of the institutional steering committee for the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, leading on Pedagogical Research in the Centre.

Research interests for potential research students

Research

I undertake pedagogic research, evaluation and supervise doctoral and MSc students from a range of academic disciplines. My recent projects include the evaluation of pedagogic practice in relation to curriculum design, social interactivity in digital learning with the Nurse Navigator System, doctoral dialogic feedback strategies, contexts of learning and Social Constructionism with Lego Serious Play.

I have also undertaken a six-month pilot study of peer-assisted student support and supplemental instruction with PhD and Masters students from Public Health. For several years, I worked with the regional charity, Mental Health North East in raising awareness of the stigmatisation that accompanies mental illness, leaving many socially isolated and compounding factors of direct relevance to mental health and wellbeing. This included work with women's mental health and wellbeing, the mental health of military veterans and issues of accessibility to physical healthcare resources for people living with mental illness.
