Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Medical Education Assessment

I graduated in 2002 with a PhD in the cardiorespiratory response to trauma at Durham University and again in 2008 with a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. In 2019 I received recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In 2018, following approval from the GMC to recruit students into the new School of Medicine, I became the Academic Assessment and Quality Lead in Medicine. I am now Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Medical Education Assessment in the School of Medicine. My roles within the medical school include Assessment Lead, Year 1 Lead and Unit 4 (Emergencies) Lead.

Teaching and supervision

Undergraduate teaching
I am a Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Medical Education Assessment in the Sunderland School of Medicine, which will have its first cohort in September 2019. I will teach cardiovascular, respiratory and renal physiology to the Phase 1 (years 1 and 2) undergraduate medical students. I am also Academic Assessment and Quality Lead and therefore responsible for the Assessment Strategy within the Medical School.

In addition, within the School of Nursing and Healthcare Sciences I am Module Leader for HCS109; Introduction to Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Sleep Science, a core module on BSc (Hons) Healthcare Sciences (Cardiac Physiology) and an optional module on BSc (Hons) Physiological Sciences. I teach most of the cardiovascular content and respiratory physiology on this Level 4 module. I also teach physiology on other modules on BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences at all undergraduate levels, and supervise level 6 (third year) research dissertation projects, and literature reviews in year 2.

Postgraduate supervision
I currently supervise a PhD student whose research is to investigate the robustness of the checking process within the medications administration process. He has recently entered his third year of full-time study.

I also supervise an MD student who is assessing the potential benefits of far-forward deployment of blood products for resuscitation of a model of severe military trauma.

Research

Medical education research

My main area of research is within the field of medical and healthcare  education, specifically in the assessment of professionalism in health care students and professionals. Other research has been in the field of simulation based education and innovative teaching practices. Before this, I specialised in trauma research, specifically the effects of trauma on the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system and how this leads to alterations in cardiovascular reflexes, haemodynamics and response to fluid resuscitation.

Assessment of professionalism

Robust measures of professionalism continue to be elusive. This may be attributed to the complex nature of professionalism, which goes beyond the application of knowledge and skills to encompass humanism, accountability, altruism and the pursuit of excellence. It is known from the wider literature on work psychology that conscientiousness is the single strongest predictor of work place performance, and an expanding body of research confirms that this is also true in health care. We have developed an objective, scalar measure of diligence or conscientiousness; the Conscientiousness Index. This can be used as a proxy measure of the trait of professionalism, and it is now being explored in postgraduate health care settings. It has been shown to be valid and reliable and correlates strongly with staff and undergraduate medical students' views of professionalism. We have used it as a research tool, and for summative assessments in undergraduate medical students.

This research into measuring professionalism has had national and international impact and is influencing policy in bodies such as the General Medical Council, Health Professions Council and at Government level in the UK, and has been incorporated into the formal assessment procedures of undergraduate medical students at Durham and Newcastle Medical Schools.

Further information

I graduated with First Class Honours in Biomedical Sciences from Durham University in 1998. With the physiology bug, I continued on at Durham to gain a PhD in the cardiorespiratory response to blast injuries in 2002.

I was appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Anaesthesia, Trauma and Intensive Care at the School of Anaesthesia, James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough in 2001, and the Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Anaesthesia, Trauma and Intensive Care in the School of Health, Durham University.

In 2005, I became a Physiology Lecturer and Strand Leader for the Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Renal Medicine Strand on the Medicine course at Durham University, and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2015.

In 2007, I was awarded my teaching qualification (Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education) through Durham University’s School for Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
