Senior Lecturer in Genomics

I joined the University of Sunderland in 2017. My main research interests are in the field of cancer epigenetics, especially in relation to environmental exposures and in the development and progression of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Teaching and supervision

I lecture on topics related to genetics, epigenetics and cancer, mainly for BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science.

Module Leader:
Human Genetics and Genomics

Lecturing:
Molecular and Cellular Biology
Clinical and Professional Practice

Bioscience Research Investigation

Research interests for potential research students

I am able to supervise students on projects related to genetic and epigenetic changes in leukaemia.

Research

My main research interests are in the field of cancer epigenetics and epigenetic epidemiology.

My postdoctoral work included studies into the loss of genomic imprinting in breast cancer, and smoking-associated hypermethylation of the APC tumour suppressor gene in colorectal cancer.

More recently, I have developed an interest in the chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) epigenome. My work has focused on epigenetic changes during disease progression that modulate drug sensitivity, and analysis of retrotransposon (LINE-1 and Alu) methylation.

I also have an interest in epigenetic changes in response to environmental exposures, and how these are implicated in carcinogenesis and the development of non-communicable disease.
