Director of Postgraduate Research

I am Director of Postgraduate Research, Programme Leader for the Professional Doctorate, Reader in Practice Based Research; and I also chair the University Ethics Group. As such, I take an overview of Postgraduate Research programmes.

My background is in mental health and nurse education. During my time at Sunderland, I have led several programmes and before taking up my present position, I was Programme Leader for MSc Public Health.

I am a Reader in Practice-Based Research and as such I am very interested in practiced-based research, in particular the methodological approaches which can be used to explore, illuminate and develop practice.

A second strand of my work is my interest in social epidemiology and in particular, social inequalities and their reproduction in education and health. I am involved in a number of social epidemiology studies in sub-Sahara Africa.

Teaching and supervision

My teaching interests fall into two areas: Evidence Base Heath Care and Sociology, and specifically in the use of sociological theory to understanding and illuminating the present issues in health care. I am interested in social inequalities and their reproduction in education and health, this is reflected in both my teaching and research. I am also involved in third sector organisations which address these issues.

I have been involved in the supervision of over 20 successful doctorate students and I am at present supervising five PhD students and one Professional Doctorate student.

Research

I am involved in a number of studies in social epidemiology in sub-Sahara Africa. A second stream is around practiced based research and in particular the methodological approaches which can be used to explore, illuminating and develop practice. I have recently co-edited 'Methodologies for Practice Research' published by Sage.
