Senior Lecturer

I am a creative and critical writer researching in the fields of critical animal studies, veganism, environmental communication and practice, and forms of creaturely writing as part of a posthumanist agenda.

I’ve worked as a journalist, editor and editorial manager since 1994 across a number of national magazines and online services, particularly in the music and creative arts sector, and in development and environmental journalism. Most recently I was commissioned to produce a series of aural narratives  that are also walks, engaging with the Deep Adaptation agenda

I have a Masters in Creative and Critical Writing from Sussex University and a PhD in Creative Writing from Newcastle University. I’ve been teaching and lecturing in journalism and writing since 2005.

Research interests for potential research students

I am currently working on a book and podcast platform exploring what it means to bear witness to animal suffering. This is a critical/creative hybrid project with direct input into my teaching of multiplatform journalism and narrative, embedded in a critical animal studies/vegan studies approach to non-anthropocentric and life-sustaining practices. Other areas of interest and current work include:
  • Nature writing through a vegan lens
  • Vegan geographies at the slaughterthouse gates
  • The collaborative craft of creaturely writing
  • Masculinity and macho obstructions to vegan life practices

I am currently touring the UK with my 'How to Turn a Man Vegan in 45 Minutes' presentation, which has shown at festivals in Edinburgh,
London, Nottingham - Vegan Campout Festival , Gateshead, Belfast
Bristol, Brighton and the University of Chester Festival of Diversity.

My most recent funded project was as co-I on an AHRC Connected Communities project working with colleagues from Newcastle, Sheffield and Bristol: (R)agency? The lived practices of anger.

I am a member of the Vegan Society's Research Advisory Committee.
