I run modules on feature writing, arts reviewing, grammar and style for journalists, media history, media ethics and news business. I also teach on a module about the making of popular culture.

Research interests for potential research students

My chief area of research is media history. I have written two books on theatre history and am currently working on a project about mid-19th Century regional newspapers.

As well as working for many years as a newspaper arts and entertainments editor, I am a poet and musician. I have won awards for news writing, feature writing and creative writing. Three collections of my poetry have been published and my work has featured in several anthologies. I have worked as a poet-in-residence, jazz guitarist, and guitar teacher.
