Senior Lecturer in Film and Radio

I am the Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Film and Media and teach many modules on BA (Hons) Digital Film Production, BA (Hons) Media Production and MA Radio.

Teaching and supervision

I teach on the following Stage 2 modules: Film Theory & Criticism; British Cinema; American Film & Society and Radio Production. At Stage 3, I run the Practical Project: Script module and teach on both Radio Drama and Radio Documentary. I also run a masters module in Radio Studies.

Research interests for potential research students

My main areas of research are in the areas of film stars and stardom, film acting, film history (British and American), as well as radio theory and production, although I have previously supervised doctoral projects in gay pornography and video nasties and have examined projects on experimental radio, the history of screenwriting manuals and bullfighting films.

My main areas of research are film stars and acting, film melodrama, film history (especially studio era Hollywood) and radio theory. In addition to publishing numerous essays on Hollywood film star Bette Davis, I have written two books, Star Studies: A Critical Guide (Palgrave, 2012) and When Warners Brought Broadway to Hollywood, 1923-1939 (Springer, 2017). I have also co-written two books, On Air: Methods & Meanings of Radio, with Cindy Wieringa (Arnold/Bloomsbury, 1998) and Melodrama: Genre, Style & Sensibility, with John Mercer (Wallflower, 2004). I am also the co-editor, with Susan Smith, of the BFI Film Stars book series.
