Professional Development and Welfare Lead

I have undertaken research in Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine in areas ranging from Medical Confidentiality, Legal Doctrine of Informed Consent, Mediation in Medical Negligence Litigation, and Ethical and Legal Issues at the Beginning and End of Life.

I also have an interest in the areas of Research Ethics, Employment Law and Health and Safety Law.

Teaching and supervision

I am the Principal Lecturer in Professionalism as well as Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine in the School of Medicine.

Previously, I have lectured in these areas on the undergr/aduate Medical degree at the School of Medicine at University College Cork in Ireland, as well as at the School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy and Clinical Therapies.

In addition, I worked on the Masters Degree in End of Life Issues in the School of Nursing.

I also lectured in Professionalism and Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine at the School of Medicine at University College Dublin and the Graduate Entry School at the University of Limerick.

I have lectured extensively at postgraduate level at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and more recently on the Foundation Training Programme at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead NHS Trust.

During this time, I have supervised a number of Masters theses in the area of Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine, as well as numerous student projects.

I have experience and expertise from working life in both academic positions and as a professional legal advisor.

While working in academic positions in Ireland, I've had a wide range of experience and expertise in the areas of Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine/Clinical Ethics and Law, Professionalism, Research Ethics, as well as Employment Law and Health and Safety Law.

In addition, I have worked in these areas as a professional legal advisor in the USA as an Assistant In-House Lawyer, in Ireland as a Solicitor and more recently as Legal Services Manager in the NHS.

I have an LLM and LLD in Medical Ethics and Legal Medicine, from the National University of Ireland and Loyola University Chicago respectively.

I am also registered as a Solicitor with the Law Society of Ireland and I'm also the Roll of Solicitors for England and Wales.
