Senior Lecturer and EDI Deputy Lead, School of Medicine

I am a graduate of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences (MD) and gained a PhD in Human Molecular and Medical Genetics from the University of Cambridge (UK). I am also a qualified forensic pathologist (PGD in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology from the Iranian Legal Medical Organisation), and an Archaeologist (MSc in Biomolecular Archaeology from UMIST, Manchester).

I'm a Senior Lecturer in Pathology/Genetics, and currently, I act as:

  • EDI Deputy Lead, School of Medicine
  • Year 3 Spine Pathology Lead
  • Unit Lead for: Unit 5 (Life Course) and Unit 11 (Movement and Trauma)

Teaching and supervision

I have 20 years of experience teaching in several UK and overseas universities:

  • Medical and Forensic Genetics
  • General and Forensic Pathology
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Pathophysiology of Disorders
  • Biological Anthropology
  • Forensic Archaeology
  • Haematology and Immunology

Research interests for potential research students

I am an active researcher in the field of human molecular genetics, particularly the biology of cancer and cancer genetics. My main research interests are as follows:

  • Investigation of the genetic susceptibility to common and complex human diseases and cancer.
  • Localisation and identification of disease-causing genetic variants in the human genome.
  • Understanding of how the genetic variants contribute to disease.
  • Developing new methods to address questions regarding genetic disorders in particular cancers.
  • Investigation of the genetic variations in the connexin genes that lead to various human disorders, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, congenital disorders, and secondary lymphedema
  • In particular, I am interested in identifying genes that predispose humans to cancer or contribute to cancer growth through somatic changes.
  • As a Biomolecular Archaeologist, I am also interested in studying ancient DNA (extracted from human, animals, or plant specimens that died decades, hundreds, or sometimes thousands of years ago) to reconstruct the origins, evolution, and spread of human populations in the past.

Research

My current research addresses two broad topics: the genetic susceptibility to common and complex human diseases and the characterisation of the function of genetic variants and their contribution to diseases. I am interested in identifying genes that predispose humans to cancer or contribute to cancer growth through somatic changes.

I investigate the inherited faulty genes that increase the risk of developing various types of cancers in different ethnic groups all around the world (on a global scale) and the use of genetic testing for identification of molecular biomarkers for early diagnosis of the faulty genes. I am also involved in genomic tumour analyses research, which has greatly enhanced our understanding of the diversity among different types of cancer and among different patients' tumours of the same type. This large-scale genomic tumour analysis is helping us to identify “driver” mutations in different populations that might provide specific therapeutic targets.
