Principal Lecturer and MPharm Programme Leader
I am a Principal Lecturer and the Programme Leader for Master of Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. I am a National Teaching Fellow and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am responsible for the strategic academic leadership and operational management of the pharmacy course.
I completed my MPharm degree at the University of Sunderland and have significant multi-sector experience in clinical practice.
I began working as an Academic Tutor at the University of Sunderland in 2014, before taking on a permanent post as Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Therapeutics in 2015. I was promoted to Principal Lecturer in 2017.
I am the principal investigator on an NIHR NENC ARC funded project exploring the role of community pharmacists in the early identification of patients with suspected head and neck cancer.
Teaching and supervision
I teach clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice across all four stages of the MPharm and contribute to the postgraduate MSc in Clinical Pharmacy. I am the Programme Leader for MPharm and my role encompasses all aspects of teaching, learning, assessment and student support.
I supervise the academic pre-registration trainee pharmacists at the University and also hold an external examiner appointment at another UK School of Pharmacy.
Research interests for potential research students
I currently supervise three PhD and four MSc students.
My research interests include both clinical practice and education. I am the principal investigator on an NIHR NENC ARC funded project exploring the role of community pharmacists in the early identification of patients with suspected head and neck cancer.
I am a member of the Society for Academic Primary Care and on the Editorial Board for BMC Health Services Research.
My research to date has been focused on oral health; exploring the adverse effects of medications on the oral cavity, the links between oral and systemic disease and the interprofessional management of oral health conditions. My educational research is focused on the development of interprofessional education, simulation-based learning and patient contact in pharmacy education. My PhD thesis was titled "The role of the pharmacist in the promotion of oral health and the interprofessional prevention of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ)".
In 2016, I was awarded the Pharmacy Research UK and UK Clinical Pharmacy Association Clinical Research Grant for the MAP-BRONJ study. This study explored the interprofessional management of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.
I have also received grants from NHS England to evaluate the prescribing of antibiotics by dentists and from the Higher Education Funding Council for England to develop and evaluate interprofessional education in undergraduate healthcare students.
