Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Sciences, Programme Leader of Cosmetic Science
I have a First Class Honours BSc in Pharmacy (1999), a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry (2004) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (FHEA).
I have been an academic at the University of Sunderland since 2004, initially as a Lecturer in Pharmaceutics and gradually progressed to Senior Lecturer (2008) and Reader/Associate Professor (2016) while establishing my research group on the formulation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
In 2015, I designed the BSc (Hons) Cosmetic Science course and launched it in 2016. I then designed and launched the MSc Cosmetic Science in 2020. I am Programme Leader for both courses.
I am a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (MRPharmS), registered with GPharmC, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). I am an elected Member at the Council of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) in the UK, and an invited member at the Education Committee and the Scientific Programme Committee of the SCS.
Alongside my teaching I developed and established the following new areas of research at the University:
Transdermal Drug Delivery research group (2005 - ongoing)
This is on the design and quality control of transdermal dosage forms including the rheological properties of pressure-sensitive adhesives as quality control indicator of the adhesive performance of skin patches; the design of novel hydrogels, the stabilisation of drugs via amorphous solid dispersions. (5 completed PhD students; 1 current). I have 1 patent on transdermal drug delivery.
Cosmetic Science research group (2012 - ongoing)
This is on the design and quality control of cosmetic formulations eg development of predictive tools for the correlation of product sensory descriptors with quantifiable rheological parameters; metabolism of ingredients in the skin. See my latest Special Issue in the Cosmetics journal.
Three completed research students (PhD, KTP, Erasmus); two current PhD students.
