Senior Lecturer in Community and Youth Work

I joined the University of Sunderland in 2002.

Prior to this I have worked as a community education officer for a local authority, community development worker, adult education tutor, youth worker and secondary school teacher.

I still have a close relationship to professional practice by maintaining an active involvement in the voluntary sector.

Research

As an extension of my teaching in critical pedagogy, I am interested in 'everyday' democracy or 'civil courage' i.e. the way we can engage in critical dialogue and interventions, especially when we witness incidents of discrimination and oppression in the public sphere.

My research into the impact of neo-liberalism and austerity on local communities is currently focused on the demise of public spaces and the decreasing opportunities for collective community action.
