Principal Lecturer: Quality Assurance and External Engagement

Building on a career in education spanning almost two decades, I joined the school of education in the summer of 2018 as a Principal Lecturer with a remit for Quality Assurance and External Engagement. Immediately prior to this role, I worked at Edge Hill University in a variety of roles including; Head of Initial Teacher Training Partnership, Validation and Standing Committee Chair and Secondary Undergraduate Year 3 Leader.

After achieving Qualified Teacher Status I worked in a large 11-18 secondary school in St Helens, Merseyside where I held a range of pastoral and curriculum positions but always had a passion for the subject of Design and Technology which I continued to teach throughout.

Currently, I am an External Examiner for a range of Secondary PGCE Programmes at Plymouth University and the Lead Secondary PGCE External Examiner across the Secondary STEM subjects for the Bradford College /Bolton University partnership. I have also undertaken external quality work for Northumbria, Manchester Metropolitan and St Mary’s Universities and Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland.

I am a peer reviewer for three academic journals and have presented my own work in France, The Netherlands and the USA. In addition to this, I have had work published by Routledge and Harper Collins, including the first and second edition of the iGCSE Design and Technology Teacher Guide and accompanying Student Workbook.

Research

I have published and presented original research nationally and internationally. I have also co-authored textbooks and teacher guides in support of Design and Technology. In doing so, I have undertaken solo work and collegiate work with colleagues from a range of institutions both here in the UK and abroad.

My main areas of research centre around:

  • The value and place of Design and Technology in a fully inclusive school curriculum
  • Effective use of Technology Enhanced Learning
  • Assessment within Design and Technology
  • Identifying best practice within schools
  • STEM Education in Schools
  • Experiences and motivation of pre-service teachers

I also have an interest in notions of academic ‘quality’ at all stages of education.

I have a range of expertise covering a wide array of the aspects of teacher training. Although not exclusive, this includes:

  • Designing and validating programmes of study for undergraduate and postgraduate teacher training routes
  • Planning, devising and implementing systems to monitor and support
pre-service teachers and school based partners
  • Evaluating the impact of training and bespoke intervention models to support pre-service teachers in the classroom

In addition to this, I also have expertise in the areas of:

  • STEM Education in Schools
  • Design and Technology
  • Effective use of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) to support learner progress

Originally from Hexham in the North East, my career of almost two decades comes from working in education settings almost exclusively in the North West of England. My educational background has its foundations in engineering and this is reflected in my various research interests and my first degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In addition to my academic qualifications, I have received professional recognition having been elected to the position of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and I am also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

I am also currently a doctoral student at Lancaster University.
