What does Clearing mean?

Clearing is how universities fill any available places on their courses. You can apply for Clearing if:

  • You haven't applied for university yet, but want to start a course in September
  • You have applied for university but aren't holding any offers for a place at a university or college (e.g. you may not have achieved the grades required for your firm or insurance choice)
  • You've changed your mind about the offer you're holding and want to study a different course or at another university or college

Clearing provides the perfect opportunity for you to explore your options and get another chance to apply for the course you really want to study. Many students apply through Clearing and are glad they did – one of our graduates, Alastair Scott, applied for Criminology through Clearing and says, 'The whole Clearing process at Sunderland was very laidback and the staff who helped me were friendly, helpful and outgoing. We discussed my qualifications, and they assessed my suitability for the course over the phone. It was the best decision of my life to study here and I never shut up about it!"

When is Clearing?

Clearing opens on 5 July 2024.
