Clearing FAQs

These are some of the most commonly asked questions about Clearing. Got more questions? Give us a call on 0191 515 3000 and we'll be happy to help!

I've applied to Sunderland as my first choice. When will I find out if I've got a place?

If you achieved your predicted grades, you will receive a confirmation letter from UCAS and a confirmation letter from the University of Sunderland, which will also tell you what you need to do next to enrol. Both letters should arrive on Thursday 16 August 2018.

If you have given us your mobile phone number, you will also receive a congratulatory text message from us on the same day.

I have achieved better grades than I was predicted. How do I reject my first choice and apply to Sunderland?

If you exceed your grade prediction you can apply for another course and/or university through the UCAS Adjustment process. When your first choice university changes its offer from conditional firm (CF) to unconditional firm (UF) you will have five days to register with an alternative course. During this time you will still have your original UF offer.

What if I only miss my predicted grades by a few points?

If you have an offer of a place at Sunderland but you achieved slightly lower grades than you needed, we may be able to reconsider your application or offer you a place on a similar course. Call the helpline to talk to a Clearing advisor – 0191 515 3000.

We also have a range of Integrated Foundation Year courses, which are specifically designed for those with lower or non-traditional qualifications.

What subjects are Sunderland offering through Clearing?

Places can be filled very quickly so you must call the helpline on 0191 515 3000 to discuss the subject you are interested in. UCAS will also list all courses in Clearing.

Is it too late to apply for University accommodation for September 2018?

No, all of our first-year students are guaranteed an accommodation place for 2018. Find out more about your accommodation options.

What is the final date I can apply through Clearing?

You can apply to the University up to the end of September, shortly after undergraduate courses begin.

Is there a charge for Clearing?

If you are already in the UCAS system or Clearing, you will have already paid your fee to UCAS. If you are making a new application, there is no fee.

What time is the Clearing helpline open?

The Clearing helpline is open:

7am – 7pm on Thursday 16 August 2018
7am – 7pm on Friday 17 August 2018
10am – 4pm Saturday 18 August 2018
