Internships

If you are looking to gain some work experience in a field you are interested in pursuing in your graduate career, internships are an excellent starting point.

What is an Internship?

Internships are work experience programmes offered by employers to students and graduates who are looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field. Interns work either part-time or full-time at a company, usually on a fixed, short-term basis, and opportunities should always be paid.

What Internships are available?

Our Sunderland Futures Internship Schemes offer a great way to begin your graduate-level career by gaining relevant skills and experience in a particular field.

Graduate Internships Scheme

With our Graduate Internship Scheme you can discover what working in a particular role is like while gaining essential experience, highly sought after by employers. All of our internships are paid and we offer a range of opportunities to accommodate many subject areas.

What's in it for me?
  • As an intern, you will be working for a local organisation on a full-time basis and earn a competitive wage,
  • You will be working on projects under the guidance of a supervisor from the host company, as well as the University’s dedicated Graduate Internships Team.
  • Internships are initially on a fixed-term basis. This gives you enough time to understand the connection between academic study and how that can be applied to the world of work.
  • An internship is also a fantastic way to start building a network of professional contacts in your chosen career

The Graduate Internship Scheme is supported by the European Union Regional Development Fund.

Internships outside of the University

Internships are a great way to get noticed by top graduate recruiters, some employers even fast-track their most impressive interns through their graduate recruitment process. They can also offer you the chance to ‘get a foot in the door’ and start building a network of professional contacts in an organisation you are interested in working for.

Some organisations also offer formal, undergraduate internship programmes that tend to begin either in September or early summer, with applications opening in the spring or the preceding autumn.

If you need help finding an internship book a 1-2-1 Guidance appointment with us at the Careers and Employability Service.

Remember, internships should always be paid opportunities. If you’re unsure talk to us to discuss the role you are interested in.
