Placements can play an important role in putting you ahead of the competition and securing your first job. There are different forms of placements, from two-week projects to year-long paid placements.

Many of our degree programmes offer you the opportunity to take a placement year in a company during your course. This experience is invaluable. Students who take advantage of a placement year often find it gives them the edge in the jobs market and it also helps them to achieve a better grade of degree.

Shorter bite-sized placements also offer great experience and can still have such an impact, even in a short space of time. We work with some of the country's leading companies and organisations to ensure that each placement meets the expectations of you and the employer.

What are the benefits of doing a placement?

  • Get experience in an industry or sector you’re interested in
  • Get skills and develop key competencies that graduate recruiters look for
  • Explore your options and work out what you might want to do after you graduate
  • Many students earn a salary while on a placement
  • Many students will return to complete their studies having already secured a graduate job offer from their placement employer

What to do when considering a placement

It's never too soon to start your placement journey. Most students take a year-long placement after completing their 2nd year but with shorter, bite-sized placements the opportunities can flexible.

  • Talk to your Placement Team or academic personal tutor to check what type of placement might be suitable for your course and to get ideas
  • Ask to talk to other students who have already done a placement and network with them on LinkedIn so you can find out about their experiences
  • Go to on-campus employer events like the Graduate Recruitment & Placement Fair to find out what it's like to work for an organisation.
