Case Study

Scott Miller

Learning Technologist/Developer

I am Learning Technology Manager. I currently head the Learning Support Group in CELT, where I lead Academic Development and Learning Technology Teams. The Learning Technology Team promote and support the use of technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The Academic Development team provide general pedagogic support, support HEA fellowship applications and provide staff development for academic staff and postgraduate research students.

I have well over two decades of experience as a manager in Higher Education, providing services to academic colleagues. For many years I have operated at a senior management level where I have contributed to strategy and policy decisions.

I have successfully managed people, projects and services to develop and deliver innovative IT and learning technology solutions - including the development of teaching and learning spaces.

I have led a number of major technology roll outs. I am a veteran of two VLE replacements at Sunderland. I implemented ‘new’ SunSpace when I joined and five years later steered the move to Canvas. At Durham I led the roll out of an institution-wide web content management system. At Essex I selected and implemented the VLE WebCT and QuestionMark Perception, a leading objective testing system. At Aberdeen, the courseware I produced was used by a consortium of UK universities.

At Essex I was very involved in ensuring that teaching rooms and lecture theatres were suitably equipped and that teaching staff were using the facilities to engage their students. I helped to specify the informal and formal learning spaces in Durham University’s Calman Learning Centre and led the IT and AV portion of the build project.

I have a degree in Animal Ecology, PG Cert in Biological Computation and a PG Cert in Educational Technology.

I have ITIL Foundation Certificate (IT Service Management) and I am a Prince 2 Practitioner. I have completed several MOOCS for my professional development.

  • Better Leader, Richer Life - MOOC (Coursera)
  • On Strategy: What Managers Can Learn from Great Philosophers - MOOC (Coursera)
  • Organizational Analysis - MOOC (Coursera)
  • Carpe Diem - MOOC (Blackboard CourseSites)

I began working at the University of Sunderland in 2011. Previously I worked at Durham, Essex and Aberdeen universities.
