Knowledge Transfer Partnerships - Academics

A KTP provides a unique opportunity for Academic researchers to see the real impact of their research activity within an industry environment.

The project is centred on a specific company innovation that is intended to bring new knowledge and expertise to the company. The project milestones are scoped and agreed with the company partner and the academic lead, at the start of each project. The opportunity for knowledge exchange from the Academic to the Associate can have impactful and beneficial outcomes for all parties.

Benefits for academics

  • Opportunity to transfer new knowledge gained from working within industry to teaching
  • Generate research income for the University
  • On average three new research projects and two research papers created for each KTP project
  • Identifying new research themes and contributing to the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
  • Leading a rewarding and ongoing collaboration with innovative companies requiring research-based expertise to succeed
  • Publishing high-quality journals and conference papers

As part of the KTP Project, the company will get access to Academic time, this equates roughly to half a day per week hands-on supervision of the KTP Associate at the company premises.

Here is what some of our KTP Academics said about working on a KTP Project:

“The KTP with Adept Ltd has helped us develop new module materials including case studies which will be used in the areas of MSc Telecommunication Systems and BSc Network Systems, as well as develop numerous student projects with the company.”
Phil Irving - Senior Lecturer

"This was my first KTP and I'm delighted with all the positive feedback received from Innovate UK; the KTP submission was ranked 5th in the UK and the final report received Grade B which is "Very Good". It has been great to see my project plan materialising and the KTP Associate, who was also my project student during her undergraduate studies here at the University of Sunderland, excelling in the KTP role and eventually landing her dream job at the company.”
