A University of Sunderland graduate has been recognised for his exceptional career as an educational leader, innovator and coach.
Jean-Pierre Adamson is based in Hong Kong and works with international schools and educators worldwide to create innovative, student-centred learning environments and inquiry-based curricula, while offering teachers professional learning and collaborative opportunities.
In recognition of his achievements, community involvement and service to the University, Jean-Pierre was presented with the Alumni Achiever of the Year Award (Hong Kong) at the University of Sunderland’s Hong Kong graduation ceremony on November 30.
Jean-Pierre, who completed his PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in 2017, said: "I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the University of Sunderland. The PGCE programme offered me the key to an incredible career in international education. I have carried that opportunity with me every day since, and I am so grateful to have chosen this pathway a few years ago.
“For me, this award is about our responsibility to the future: to never stop learning, to grow into the mentor you would wish to have, and to serve as the shoulders for the next generation. It belongs to every educator striving to be a great teacher - especially to those inspirational, life-changing ones who somehow made learning that much sweeter.
“The journey of the University into a true global community over the last few years has been quite extraordinary. It was such a privilege receiving this award, sharing a few words with the 2025 graduates, and meeting the exceptional leadership team. I am now looking forward to following the next steps of this exciting journey, and to supporting the University further over the coming years."

As Curriculum Adviser for the English Schools Foundation (ESF) in Hong Kong, Jean-Pierre oversees curriculum development and review across 22 international schools, impacting over 18,000 students. ESF is one of the world's leading IB (International Baccalaureate) school groups in Hong Kong.
His leadership ensures that these institutions remain at the forefront of educational excellence, preparing students from 75 countries to excel as global citizens. He also holds major accountability for the professional development of over 950 Early Years and Primary educators across Hong Kong.
Prior to his role with ESF, Jean-Pierre served as Head of English at the German-Swiss International School (GSIS) in Hong Kong, where he implemented innovative pedagogy and curriculum enhancements. Jean-Pierre is a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, a testament to his commitment to high-quality professional learning and evidence-informed practice.
Jean-Pierre is actively involved in the educational community, serving as a debate competition judge and academic tutor. In September 2023, Jean-Pierre co-founded Parity Coaching, a social enterprise dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality coaching and professional development to educators and compassionate professionals worldwide. Parity Coaching aims to provide accessible personal development. This initiative reflects his dedication to giving back to the educational community and empowering fellow professionals to excel in their roles.
Jean-Pierre grew up in Kent, but Hong Kong has been his home since 2012.
Francis Chiang, Campus Director at the University of Sunderland in Hong Kong, said: “Jean-Pierre represents the heart of our Sunderland community in Hong Kong – dedication, humility and a genuine desire to elevate others. His impact on educators and students across Hong Kong and beyond is remarkable, and we are delighted to honour him with this award.”
Mark Burdon, Chair of the Board of Governors at the University of Sunderland, who attended the Hong Kong Graduation Ceremony, said: “Jean-Pierre has remained committed to the University of Sunderland's mission, promoting its values of innovation, inclusion, and impact. He actively encourages educators to enrol in the PGCE course, extending the University's reach and influence in the international education sector.
“His work truly exemplifies the transformative power of education and the enduring impact of a Sunderland education.”
