University falls silent for Armistice Day

Students, staff and guests gathered at the University of Sunderland to remember the fallen.

The Armistice Day event took place this morning (Tuesday 11 November) at the Sunderland Veterans’ Garden on the University’s City Campus to honour the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

A two-minute silence was held as bugler Gillian McCain, from Durham Miners Association Brass Band, performed The Last Post.

Among those attending were University of Sunderland Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Sir David Bell, University Catholic Lay Chaplain Rebecca Leighton, student veterans, members of the Armed Forces Community and Richard Anderson from Op COURAGE: The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service.  

After the service, staff, students and members of the Armed Forces Community were invited to Hope Street Xchange for refreshments and a presentation by Richard from Op COURAGE.
