University of Sunderland

In 2017, Justine Gillespie, Head of HR Business Partnering at the University of Sunderland, attended Drew Dalton’s HIV/AIDS awareness training as part of the University’s Equality and Diversity Education programme.

"The University is committed to equality of opportunity in its employment. It is also committed to protecting and promoting the health of its staff and regards adherence to the upholding of basic human rights and human dignity as of fundamental importance. The University accepts that it has a role and responsibility to make available education, information and advice on HIV/AIDS. Staff living with HIV or who have developed AIDS will be treated as employees who have similar potentially serious medical conditions.

"Drew’s passion and drive to de-stigmatise HIV and AIDS led me to develop an HIV Staff Policy and the natural next step was to apply for the Positive Allies Charter Mark, which we successfully achieved in 2019. This means we can clearly demonstrate our commitment to supporting staff and potential applicants who have HIV or AIDS."
